1770s Undergarments: Shift, Stays, Cap, and Shoes
Set of late 18th Century historically accurate undergarments includes shift, stays, ruffled cap, and shoes.
Shift is simulated in lightweight, white linen, and features ruffles at the neck and sleeves.
Stays of lavender silk are adapted from the original 1776 pattern in Diderot's L'Encyclopédie, "Tailleur de Corps". The Diderot stays are 'half-boned', and feature spiral lacing at the back closure.
Ruffled cap is of off-while cotton voile, with decorative green silk ribbon around the band.
Light green leather shoes are historically accurate to the 1770s and 1780s. Like all shoes from the 18th Century, these shoes are straight-lasted; meaning there is no patterned difference between the right shoe and the left shoe. Shoes feature mid-height heels of contrasting white leather, white silk faille binding (to mimic petersham ribbon), and oval brass buckles.
